Terminology Guide

A reference glossary for terms used throughout the Dunrafern service

About this guide

The Dunrafern service uses a specific set of terms to describe how content is organised and how users interact with it. This guide defines those terms in plain language. It is intended as a reference for users who want to understand what a particular term means in the context of this service, rather than in a broader technical or academic sense.

The definitions below reflect how the terms are used within Dunrafern specifically. Where a term has a wider meaning in other contexts, that wider meaning is not necessarily implied here.

Core terms

Category
A grouping of related content items within the service. Categories form the primary organisational layer of the Dunrafern content structure. Each category has a defined scope, and content assigned to it falls within that scope. Categories can contain sub-categories, forming a hierarchy that users can navigate progressively.
Category hierarchy
The structured arrangement of categories from broad themes at the top level down to specific sub-categories at lower levels. The hierarchy is the primary navigational framework within the service. Users begin at the broadest level and move downward to narrow their focus toward the content that is most relevant to them.
Classification
The process by which content is assigned to one or more categories. Classification is carried out by the Dunrafern team and determines where content appears within the category hierarchy. Users do not carry out classification themselves; they navigate the structure that classification produces.
Content item
An individual piece of content within the service. Each content item is assigned to a category and presented within the review environment as an item record. A content item is the smallest unit of information that the service displays as a discrete entry.
Item record
The presentation of a single content item within the review environment. An item record contains a set of fields — core fields that apply to all items within the category, and any supplementary fields specific to that item. The layout of an item record is consistent across all categories, so that users can read any record using the same approach.
Review environment
The part of the service interface where users examine item records and work with the content that is available to them. The review environment is the primary workspace within Dunrafern. It provides tools for examining individual items in detail and for comparing items within a category.
Restricted area
A section of the service that is not visible to all users by default. Access to a restricted area requires an approved enquiry. The service marks restricted boundaries clearly so that users know when they have reached a point that requires additional access rather than encountering an unexplained gap in the content.
Enquiry
A message submitted to the Dunrafern team through the designated enquiry channel. Enquiries may request access to the service or to a specific category, seek clarification about a content item, raise a question about how the service works, or report an issue with how content is classified. Each enquiry is reviewed by the team individually.
Access request
A specific type of enquiry in which the user requests permission to view a part of the service that is not currently visible to them. An access request is assessed by the team, which will approve or decline it based on criteria including the stated purpose and the alignment of the request with the service's intended use.
Supplementary field
A field within an item record that contains information specific to that item and that falls outside the core field set shared by all items in the same category. Supplementary fields are presented in a designated area of the item record so that they do not disrupt the consistent layout of the core fields.
Service scope
The range of topics and content types that the Dunrafern service currently covers. The service scope determines which categories exist within the hierarchy and which content items are eligible for inclusion. The scope may change over time as the service evolves. The capabilities and service details pages reflect the current scope.
Content currency
The degree to which a content item or category reflects current information. The Dunrafern team maintains content on an ongoing basis, but different categories are updated at different frequencies. Users who require highly current information for a specific purpose should check the most recent review date on the relevant item records where this is displayed.

Using this terminology

The terms defined above appear throughout the service, including in the service overview, the capabilities page, the service details page, and within the interface itself. Using the same vocabulary when submitting an enquiry helps the team understand your request more precisely and respond more effectively.

If you encounter a term in the service that is not defined here and whose meaning is unclear, the enquiry channel is an appropriate way to ask for clarification.
